Review: iPhone App - WarpDefense

AuthorJohn Amos | DateSunday, November 1, 2009 at 6:14PM

These days technology is everywhere. We are submerged in a society with advertisements as far as the eye can see, on every surface,
I'm a fan of Tower Defense games, whether they're online, a program on my computer, or, more recently, an application on my mobile device. Less than a week ago, I came across a tower defense application on my iPod Touch called WarpDefense. The best part about it: it's free.

I had searched before for a good, free TD app, and only found TapDefense. It was was alright... but became stale after a month. Since giving up TapDefense, my quest for a fun tower defense game that didn't break the bank moved forward. Upon finding WarpDefense, I could not stop playing it. Now let's get to the specifics.

WarpDefense has 3 different levels of difficulty: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Nothing revolutionary. However, each difficulty has 30 individual maps, and each map has three achievements. You can earn bronze (completing 10 levels); silver (20 levels); and gold (30 levels). If you do the math, that's 900 levels per difficulty, or 2,700 levels to complete.

I started with the easy difficulty, since I didn't know what each tower might do, or what challenges each enemy might bring. There are six towers, each a different color. What separates this game from most other TD games I've played is that each type of enemy is also a different color, and towers cannot harm enemies of matching color. This forces the player to think and strategize in completely new ways. Another useful hint is that ending each level, you are first given 10% of your money, and then a bonus depending on your level of difficulty (150 for easy, 100 for medium, and 50 for hard). In other words if you save your money, you make more after each round. But if you don't spend enough, you won't make it through.

Needless to say, each level gets harder, but levels 1-10 (bronze) are much easier than the difficulty of 10-20, and likewise 20-30. You should attempt to save your money in the beginning in order to get more money per turn. You will then be able to upgrade your towers to combat the more numerous and powerful enemies in later levels.

This game provides countless hours of fun, and may take weeks, or even months, to complete by playing conservatively in your spare time. It introduces new challenges not faced in any TD game I've played, and overall provides a much more entertaining atmosphere than any free game I've collected on my Touch thus far.
